NeonatalCitrobacter koseriMeningitis: Report of Four Cases

Abstract: Citrobacter koseri is a rare cause of neonatal meningitis with predisposal for brain abscesses, and therefore responsible for high mortality and serious neurologic sequelae in this age group. We present the evolution and outcome of four cases of C. koseri meningitis. One of them developed brain abscesses and another one died. The cases show the bacteria's propensity for serious brain damage, despite early and adequate treatment, and the high risk of long-term neurologic complications in survivors, which impose… Show more

“…Various types of neurological disorders are observed in about 50–80% of children who survive Citrobacter koseri infections complicated by brain abscesses [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. It is claimed that Citrobacter koseri may be transferred vertically from the mother to the child, but there is no evidence that this route of bacterial transfer is responsible for brain absences in premature neonates [ 4 ].…”

“…It is claimed that Citrobacter koseri may be transferred vertically from the mother to the child, but there is no evidence that this route of bacterial transfer is responsible for brain absences in premature neonates [ 4 ]. Oftentimes, bacterial transfer occurs horizontally from hospital personnel [ 3 , 4 ]. However, the source of infection in our patient remains unclear.…”
