Neonatal and 5-Year Outcomes After Birth at 30–34 Weeks of Gestation

Abstract: Neonates born at 30-34 weeks experienced substantial morbidity and often required admission to neonatal intensive care units. These outcomes suggest that prolonging pregnancies beyond 34 weeks may be desirable whenever possible. Infants born at 30-34 weeks should be carefully monitored to ensure prompt detection and management of neurodevelopmental impairment.

“…Likewise, the incidence of both developmental disability and cerebral palsy is higher among children born prematurely. [108][109][110] As acknowledged by the GDG, the guideline models probably overestimate QALYs for these children. In addition, the models used utility scores derived by two different methods, TTO and EQ-5D.…”

“…Although assisted ventilation and the introduction of surfactant therapy improved pediatric outcome in the 1990s, a baby born at 24 weeks' gestation still has only about a 50% chance of survival, and approximately more than one quarter of the survivors will have severe neurodevelopmental handicap 2,3 . The rates of perinatal death and severe handicap decline to 8% and 10% for babies born at 30 weeks and further reduce to 0.4% and 5% for those born at 34 weeks, respectively 4 .…”
