“…The earliest figural representations of people are the stylized faces on the Neolithic chalk 'drums' from Folkton, East Yorkshire (Longworth 1999) and a small number of figurines from Orkney (Goring 2011; Varndell 2012; Scarre 2017, 879–80), while the earliest of the few prehistoric wooden figurines also date to this period (Coles 1990). Although much of their detail was lost as they shrunk, twisted and became distorted on drying out after their discovery, the figurines from Ballachulish, in the Highlands, Kinsteignton from Devon, and Roos Carr in East Yorkshire, all had – and the figures on the Roos Carr boat still have – well‐modelled faces, sometimes with pebbles inset as their eyes.…”
