Honaz Dağı (Honaz Mountain, Denizli) is the highest peak in western Anatolia (2517 m) and represents the southern margin of the Denizli Graben Horst System in the western Anatolia Extensional Province. Honaz Fault is a 2-km-wide, 15-km-long northward arc-shaped dip-slip listric normal fault that bounds the northern margin of Honaz Dağı, and has been formed under an N-S-trending extensional tectonic regime since the early Quaternary. This study uses fieldwork and digital elevation model-based geomorphic analysis to identify the kinematic behaviour of the Honaz Fault. Morphometric indices, such as axial river profiles, drainage basin geometries, triangular facets, mountain-front lineament patterns and sinuosities, document the impact of active tectonics on the evolution of the Honaz Fault and its surroundings, as do valley floor width-to-height ratios and mountain front facet characteristics. These neotectonic indices suggest a relatively high degree of tectonic activity along the Honaz Fault, and suggest that the Quaternary landscape evolution of Honaz Dağı was governed by structural and climate-related erosional processes. Combined geomorphic indices and field data suggest that the analysed dip-slip normal fault segments of the Honaz Fault are linear and highly active, and could generate earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.7. Morphometric analyses of the fault trace along the mountain front yield minimum slip rates of .15-.38 mm/y for the Honaz Fault, which are similar to slip rates calculated for active normal faults in the Aegean region.

Field evidence for normal fault linkage and relay ramp evolution: the Kırkağaç Fault Zone, western Anatolia (Turkey)

Linking of normal faults forms at all scales as a relay ramp during growth stages and represents the most efficient way for faults to lengthen during their progressive formation. Here, I study the linking of normal faulting along the active Kırkağaç Fault Zone within the west Anatolian extensional system to reconstruct fault interaction in time and space using both field-and computer-based data. I find that (i) connecting of the relay zone/ramp occurred with two breaching faults of different generations and that (ii) the propagation was facilitated by the presence of pre-existing structures, inherited from the İzmir-Balıkesir transfer zone. Hence, the linkage cannot be compared directly to a simple fault growth model. Therefore, I propose a combined scenario of both hangingwall and footwall fault propagation mechanisms that explain the present-day geometry of the composite fault line. The computer-based analyses show that the approximate slip rate is 0.38 mm/year during the Quaternary, and a NE-SW-directed extension is mainly responsible for the recent faulting along the Kırkağaç Fault Zone. The proposed structural scenario also highlights the active fault termination and should be considered in future seismic hazard assessments for the region that includes densely populated settlements.

içerisinde yer alan Bolvadin yerleşim alanında gözlenmektedir. Bu alanda, bir kısmı imar planı içerisinde kalan bölge ile şehrin güneybatı kısmından başlayarak kuzeydoğu istikametine doğru yer alan bölgelerde, son 4 yıldan itibaren daha önceden olmayan bazı deformasyonlar oluşmuş ve oluşmaya devam etmektedir. Bölgede yapılan çalışmalarda, yıkıcı deprem olmaksızın, uzunlukları 300 metre ile 2 km; doğrultuları ise K15°D ile K70°D arasında değişen hareketler ve yarılmalar şeklinde gelişen kademeli yüzey deformasyonları haritalanmıştır. Yerleşim alanı içerisinde haritalanan yüzey deformasyonlarının en kuzeyde olanı Bolvadin Fayı'nın güneybatıdaki devamı niteliğindedir. Yapılan jeolojik ve jeomorfolojik analizler yüzey faylanmaları boyunca, güneydoğuda yer alan bloğun 10-40 cm arasında düştüğüne işaret etmektedir. Yapılan jeodezik analizler bölgedeki son dört yıllık düşey yerdeğiştirme hızının 7,1 cm/yıl olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu sonuçlar, Bolvadin Fayı boyunca gelişen yüzey deformasyonlarının önemli bir nedeninin, yeraltı su seviyesi düşüşüyle ilgili olduğunu göstermektedir. Söz konusu yüzey deformasyonlarının oluşumuna, bölge tektoniğinin katkısını ortaya koymak için hendek tabanlı paleosismolojik çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.
