Nelumbo Nucifera leaf protects against UVB-induced wrinkle formation and loss of subcutaneous fat through suppression of MCP3, IL-6 and IL-8 expression

“…Recent study by Park et al revealed that topical administration of dichloromethyl extract of N. nucifera leaves attenuated ultraviolet-B (UVB)-mediated wrinkle formation and reduction of subcutaneous fat in vivo. In addition, the study reported that the treatment of the extract inhibited UVB-induced expression of IL-6, IL-8, and MCP3, which are known regulators in subcutaneous fat metabolism, in mouse skin fibroblasts, suggesting the potential therapeutic role for N. nucifera leaves against photoaging-related disorders (Park et al, 2016). “…The ethanol extracts of the lotus seed epicarps at a concentration of 100 μg/mL (Qi & Zhou, ) and methanol extracts of the petals at 2 μg/mL (Velusami et al., ) can inhibit preadipocyte (3T3‐L1 cells) differentiation by 70% and 19%, respectively. Controversially, Park, Yoo, Ryu, and Lee () reported that dichloromethyl and n ‐hexane fractions of LL, extracted using 99% methanol, at 20 μg/mL stimulated adipocyte differentiation by 146.8% and 125.12%, respectively; whereas the water fractions attenuated the differentiation by 89.6%. This indicated that the extraction solvents have a great impact on adipocyte differentiation.…”
