“…To date, ciprofl oxacin-resistant serogroup A N. meningitidis has not been reported anywhere in the world. Four reports of sporadic instances of decreased susceptibility to ciprofl oxacin: serogroup B from France in 1999 and Spain in 2002, serogroup C from Australia in 1998, and serogroup Y from Argentina in 2002 (4)(5)(6). For the fi rst time, to our knowledge, we report the emergence of decreased susceptibility of serogroup A N. meningitidis to ciprofl oxacin from the 2005 outbreak in Delhi.…”

“…The majority of the NM with no susceptibility to ciprofloxacin reported to date present gyr A mutations, and the alteration at Thr91-Ile seems to be the most common [40], [42]. This mutation was originally described in Spain 2003 [43] and subsequently found in 11 serogroup A strains from New Delhi, India [44], [45], as well as in three serogroup B strains from the USA [42], [46], [47]. The non-susceptibility to ciprofloxacin was detected for first time in serogroup W135 during 2008 in two NM strains from Spain (Thr91-Ile) and in one from France (Thr91-Ile) [40], [48].…”

“…Meningococcal resistance to fluoroquinolones has been rarely reported and only at a low level (MIC 0.12-0.25 mg/L): one strain in Greece [40], a few strains in England and Wales [41]; France [42]; Spain [43]. The potential for the development of this resistance is similar, according to in vitro studies, to those seen in quinolone-resistant N. gonorrhoeae strains with alterations in gyrA and parC genes [44].…”
