In this study, I propose through my own voice, attachment, and representation an expansive and inclusive construction of Indonesian Muslim middle-class women that may pose a challenge to the hegemonic construction of Indonesianness. I explore the renegotiation of the self, using the definition of Ibuism, state laws, and Islamic teachings as the frameworks through which the “good” Indonesian Muslim woman is constructed. Ibuism, derived from Ibu, an Indonesian term for “mother,” refers to the social construction of Indonesian womanhood within the household domain, as imposed by the authoritarian government for nearly 32 years (1966–1998). I use reflexive notes as my data to explore how the postauthoritarian era has affected me as a representative subject. Autoethnography offers a space to find that others’ assessment of my Muslimness is an effective lens through which I view my being and my becoming as a woman, an Indonesian, and a Muslim.

El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar el estado del arte de los aportes de la psicología social y la sociología para comprender la obesidad y la gordura. Tradicionalmente, el cuerpo ha sido material de las ciencias naturales, donde las ciencias sociales han ocupado un rol secundario. Sin embargo, la complejidad que involucra el aumento de la obesidad en los últimos años ha creado una necesidad por una comprensión psicosocial. Hemos agrupado estas contribuciones en cuatro grupos: (1) las teorías de discriminación y estigmatización; (2) la sociología de las desigualdades en salud; (3) la construcción social de la obesidad y los Fat Studies; y (4) la biopolítica de la obesidad. Concluimos que estos estudios han dado protagonismo a la norma médica, obviando otros modos desde los cuales pensar el cuerpo gordo. Sugerimos indagar en mayor profundidad en aquellos conceptos supuestos como contrarios, como la delgadez.

This is an autoethnographic article that explores the intersection of fatness, pregnancy, motherhood, health and diabetes, and interaction with the medical profession. The autoethnographic approach used includes both written stories and photographic narrative. There have been times when my fat body has been seen by the medical profession as barren, incapable, and excessive and also times when I didn't know whether I could trust a medical opinion to be objective, because I inhabit a fat body. I discuss medical and cultural assumptions about a fat woman's ability to conceive, oppressive medical policies, such as how much weight a fat woman "should" gain in pregnancy and what she "should" eat according to medical guidelines. In addition, I document the complicating factor of having diabetes and the hypermonitoring of blood sugar and "dieting" to keep a baby safe, and the return of guilt about eating "the wrong things." I tell these stories to illuminate what the medicalization of fatness, pregnancy, and early motherhood have been like, including the effect it had on my ability to practice fat acceptance. The article is framed by both scholarly and fat activist approaches to the discussion of fat embodiment, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, in an attempt to expose discrimination and oppression of fat women's bodies within the medical field. I consider the question: How can a fat woman have a voice during pregnancy and into motherhood?
