Negative ion mode electrospray ionization mass spectrometry study of ammonium-counter ion clusters

Abstract: Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) was used to examine clusters of protonated amine salt solutions with chloride counter ions in the negative ion mode. These ions have the general formula [(RNH 3 ) x Cl xϩ1 ]Ϫ . Primary amines generate a wide cluster distribution with clusters up to 14 mer for methylamine hydrochloride clusters. Secondary and quaternary amines only generate the monomer ion under identical conditions. Collision induced dissociation (CID) of the cluster ions generates cluster ion… Show more

“…Indeed, the quasi-molecular ion is observed at m / z 259.22, 257.23 and 255.23, which corresponds to the cluster [ 2 + HCl] − formed by an one-electron reduction of 2 and uptake of one HCl molecule. 34…”

“…On the other hand, the ESI-MS spectrum of the same compound in the negative mode provides strong evidence in favour of the hydrochloride salt 2. “…-ion using (-)ESI, a quat will require the addition of two negative charges in order to generate a charge of -1 [8,10,26]. -cluster, an appropriate anion would be required, as not all anions would have the same propensity to form the cluster [27] (see example mass spectra of quat and non-quat in Supplementary Figure 1).…”

“…Isopropanol has been already employed for lipid solubilization . In addition, isopropanol is a midpolar protic solvent suitable as injection solvent for electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI), both combined (for example with hexane) and pure, and it is able to moderately dissolve salts. Isopropanol may be used as an MS compatible solvent with the further advantage of a lipid‐solubilization ability comparable with halogenated solvents, ethers, and hexane/isopropanol mixtures.…”
