Seventy-seven percent of all agricultural land is related to livestock, meat and dairy, including grazing land and arable fields used for animal feed production. The effect of livestock on the natural environment is well documented. Many types of research describe these effects on biodiversity. The surface runoff and soil erosion on grasslands and pastures are investigated with smaller intensity since grasslands are one of the two major land uses that are considered as natural or at least semi-natural lands. Still, mainly due to overuse, grazing on sloping pasture lands can cause severe soil damage, the trampling can cause compaction, compaction decrease infiltration and thus increase runoff and, consequently, soil loss. There are several consequences of the grazing pressure that cause water erosion and surface runoff above the acceptable limit, such as a dramatic decrease in grass densities and/or above-ground bio-mass, compaction, animal tracks, etc. Related research started as early as 1911 and continues until today. There are several methods to analyse the consequences of grazing pressure, e.g., in situ rainfall simulations, infiltration and soil resilience measurements, modelling of runoff, soil loss and infiltration, calculation of ecological costs, etc. Furthermore, most importantly, scientists are investigating the possibilities for improvement of the achieved unstable grazing system due to bad management. Numerous publications have been publishing results on positive changes with the removal of grazing livestock from the grasslands. However, since the socio-economic situation is changing on Earth, more people requiring the products of the pastures, an optimal grazing solution is greatly needed. One of the solutions can be the planning of the optimal animal unit per area, based on the expected grass yields. However, due to the big differences in yields, caused by the greatly unreliable weather, the solution for the future must be a multifunctional agriculture and a flexible land use.

Colombia es uno de los mayores productores de café en el mundo, con un mercado que superó los 13,9 millones de sacos en 2020. Sin embargo, en el proceso de beneficio húmedo del café se emplean grandes cantidades de agua, aproximadamente 4.154.354 m3, en las fases de despulpado, lavado y transporte del grano, generando aguas residuales contaminadas que tienen poco tratamiento antes de ser vertidas a las fuentes hídricas. En el presente trabajo se buscó aislar especies de microalgas que crezcan en estos ambientes, utilizar estas especies en procesos de depuración de aguas residuales del proceso de lavado del café y buscar una aplicación de la biomasa resultante. Para la obtención de las cepas de microalgas se utilizaron técnicas de agotamiento. Con el fin de evaluar su capacidad de depuración, estas fueron cultivadas en agua residual de diferentes concentraciones bajo condiciones de laboratorio, determinando la remoción de materia orgánica. Adicionalmente, se caracterizó bioquímicamente la biomasa algal para determinar posibles usos biotecnológicos o industriales. Se encontró dos Chloroficeaes cocales, Parachlorella kessreli y Desmodesmus armatus, las cuales demostraron una alta eficiencia en la remoción de nitrógeno total (> 50 %) y fósforo total (> 70 %), así como una disminución significativa de la DQO (> 70 %) en los mejores tratamientos. Finalmente, se encontró para Parachlorella kessreli alta producción de lípidos y para Desmodesmus armatus alta producción de proteína.

Context Evidence-based knowledge is crucial for place-based knowledge production and learning towards sustainable landscapes through stewardship and integrated spatial planning. Objectives We focus on the landscape service concept as a tool, and three fundamental challenges for its use: (1) how to monitor benefits provided by different landscapes; (2) to demonstrate trade-offs and synergies among benefits in a landscape; and (3) to discuss how to incorporate results from analyses into landscape stewardship and planning. Methods As a case study we chose the Iranian Qazvin province with diverse natural and anthropogenic landscapes, and top-down societal steering. Five landscape services (water yield, water regulation, pollination, actual net primary production (NPPact) and social-cultural connectivity) were assessed and compared. Results All landscape services were significantly correlated. Major trade-offs and synergies among services were between NPPact and water yield and regulation. Trade-off and synergy clusters showed that landscape functions depend on both natural and anthropogenic landscape patterns and processes. Conclusions Providing transparent data about trade-offs and synergies among landscape services can facilitate learning about which services are important among landscapes. For each of six settings we suggest action plans. We discuss the role of Iranian landscape stewardship and planning, and integrative research needs.
