Negative Emotional Energy: A Theory of the “Dark-Side” of Interaction Ritual Chains

Abstract: Abstract:Randall Collins' theory of interaction ritual chains is widely cited, but has been subject to little theoretical elaboration. One reason for the modest expansion of the theory is the underdevelopment of the concept of emotional energy. This paper examines emotional energy, related particularly to the dynamics of negative experiences. It asks whether or not negative emotions produce emotional energies that are qualitatively distinct from their positive counterparts. The analysis begins by tracing the d… Show more

“…This can be seen in the light of Collins’ interaction ritual theory . The theory focuses on the importance of interaction rituals, emotional solidarity and the concept of emotional energy (EE) . According to Collins , EE is ‘…a continuum, ranging from a high end of confidence, enthusiasm, good self‐feelings; down through a middle range of lesser states, and to a low end of depression, lack of initiative, and negative self‐feelings’ (p. 32).…”

“…Whilst Collins’ theory helps to provide a rationale for ineffective collaboration and lack of respect for personhood, it is argued that Collins’ theory lacks a dimension . Boyns and Lurey believe that since Collins focused primarily on positive EE, the model lacks an expression of ‘the ritual dynamics of the dark‐side of emotional experiences’ (, p. 149). They asked what kind of energy is produced on the basis of negative emotional experiences and launched the idea of negative EE (EE−), where low levels of EE− result in feelings like avoidance and irritation.…”

“…Nevertheless, certain face-to-face interaction rituals succeed, while others fall flat (Collins, 2004) or lead to suspicion and conflict (Boyns and Luery 2015). Despite attempts to convince participants of the importance of these skills, some "nonbelievers" (Elms and Costell 1992) failed to be convinced of their importance, e.g., "it was too touchy feely for my taste."…”

“…Estrangement can be costly. When institutions do not moderate disagreements, rifts can generate hostility (Boyns and Luery 2015;Gershenson 2019) and antagonistic emotions (Silver 2011). Scholars emphasize friendships and alliances (Weatherford 1981), recognizing the commitment, networking potential, and social ordering of interaction rituals (Collins 2004;Goffman 1967).…”
