“…The elderly population with ARMD in this study had multiple health problems and additional eye diseases, each of which affects performance of ADL. Since elderly persons with visual impairment have been found to be a group with multiple disabilities [10,24,25] and at high risk of developing ADL disability [21,26,27], we suggest it is of vital importance to consider multiple impairments when assessing the need for assistive devices.…”

“…There seem to be very few studies concerning the use of assistive devices among the elderly with visual impairment. Mann et al [10] examined the use of and need for assistive devices in 30 elderly visually impaired persons living at home and found that elderly persons with visual impairment had an average of four health problems. They were found to be high users of assistive devices and used on average 14.5 assistive devices each, and these addressed not only the visual impairment area but also the area of physical disabilities [10].…”

“…Although user satisfaction with ATDs is a timely and significant subject of study, a review of the literature reveals that in most of the investigations on assistive device use, an overall measure of satisfaction was obtained (Bilodeau, 1994;Bynum & Rogers, 1987;Chamberlain & Gallop, 1988;Demers et al , 1994;Finlayson & Havixbeck, 1992;Garber & Gregorio, 1989;Mann, Karuza, Hurren, & Tomita, 1993 ). In some of these studies (Bynum & Rogers, 1987;Chamberlain & Gallop, 1988;Mann et al, 1993), the global assessment of satisfaction did not take into account the various factors of influence on a person's use or nonuse of assistive technology.…”

“…The scoring scales used to measure user satisfaction with ATDs are generally either binary (yes/ no) (Bynum & Rogers, 1987;Finlayson & Havixbeck , 1992;Mann et al , 1993 ) or ordinal with four or five levels of satisfaction (Bilodeau , 1994;Chamberlain & Gallop, 1988;Demers et al, 1994;Garber & Gregorio, 1989). Excluding the study by Bilodeau (Bilodeau, 1994 ), the satisfaction levels obtained with these scales are very high.…”
