Needle electromyography of the diaphragm: A new technique

Abstract: Electrodiagnostic evaluation of diaphragmatic function has consisted of phrenic nerve stimulation and surface or esophageal recordings of the electrical activity of the diaphragm. Needle electromyography of the diaphragm has rarely been reported because of the perceived danger of this procedure. We describe a new technique for needle electromyography of the diaphragm. An EMG electrode is placed in the costal insertion of the diaphragm under the 8th, 9th, or 10th rib cartilage, distant from the major vessels, p… Show more

“…Bolton reported that a telephone survey of 1,000 individuals after diaphragm EMG examination identified 2 cases of pneumothorax, a similar frequency (0.2%) to our finding (0.149%). Saadeh et al . reported no complications in 108 individuals who underwent diaphragm EMG by a different technique.…”

“…Additionally, apart from recording potentials following nerve stimulation, needle electrodes can be used to examine the spontaneous activity of the diaphragm [41,42]. The disadvantage is that needle electrodes only sample the portion of the diaphragm into which they are inserted.…”
