Need satisfaction, motivation, and engagement among high-performance youth athletes: A multiple mediation analysis

Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to examine whether the various types of motivation articulated in self-determination theory (SDT) mediated the relationship between basic need satisfaction (i.e. competence, autonomy, and relatedness) and athlete engagement. Four types of motivation as assessed by the Situational Motivation Scale including intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, external regulation, and amotivation were examined as mediators of the need satisfaction-engagement relationship. “…According to SDT, satisfaction of psychological needs is the mechanism through which people move toward more self-determined motivation; that is, when young football players can freely choose to pursue the activity (autonomy), feel competent in their sport (competence), and feel respected and accepted, the reasons for participating in youth sport are more likely to be the inherent pleasure and satisfaction the activity provides. Previous studies have found relationships between needs satisfaction and IM in sport (e.g., Podlog et al, 2015 ) and in PE (e.g., Standage et al, 2006 ).…”

“…Following self-determination theory, when psychological need satisfaction occurs, a personal sense of agency, effectiveness and belonging is generated in young athletes and this, in turn, favors sport engagement and commitment and prevents drop-out and maladaptive outcomes in youth sport [79,80]. Nevertheless, positive associations were demonstrated between need satisfaction and sport engagement, ranging from small/medium to large effects [81,82]. Moreover, sport commitment was enhanced and supported by high self-determination [83].…”

“…Reducing the degree of burnout experienced by athletes and promoting sport engagement is essential to achieve people's sport motivation and commitment to physical activity [18]. Although research on predictors and mediators of sport engagement is still in its initial stages, it has many implications for athletes and professionals in the sports sector, due to its relevance for performance, competition, health and physical endurance [68]. According to the findings of this study, strategies to prevent burnout and promote sport engagement should be focused on supporting satisfaction of BPN and encouraging high self-determined motivation in athletes, while the less self-determined levels are not so important.…”
