Nedaplatin and 5-FU combined with radiation in the treatment for esophageal cancer

Abstract: A series of patients with esophageal cancer was treated with chemotherapeutic regimens of the new antitumor platinum preparation nedaplatin plus 5-FU in combination with radiation therapy, and the therapeutic responses, side effects, and complications were clinically assessed. There were 2 patients with a complete response and 11 patients with a partial response, hence, a response rate of 76.5%. Major adverse reactions were those of hematological toxicity and included leukopenia (13 patients, 76.5%), thrombocy… Show more

“…There have been some studies on the effectiveness of radiotherapy (with or without chemotherapy) for treatment of postoperative recurrent esophageal cancer. In those studies, the median survival periods were 7.0~9.5 months and the 1-year survival rates were 28~69% (Table 3 ) [ 12 - 16 , 25 ]. The median survival periods in previous studies on the effectiveness of chemotherapy alone for treatment of recurrent esophageal cancer were similar, 5.0~10.5 months [ 10 , 17 - 19 ].…”

“…The rate of response to CDGP alone for treatment of esophageal cancer was reported to be 51.7% (15 partial responses obtained in 29 patients) [ 21 ]. CDGP + 5-FU seemed to have a superior effect to that of CDDP + 5-FU in a preclinical study [ 22 ] and has been shown to be safe and effective for treatment of esophageal cancer in some clinical studies [ 16 , 17 , 24 , 25 ].…”

“…However, there is no report on the usefulness of FDG-PET for predicting prognosis of postoperative recurrent esophageal cancer. Recently, chemoradiotherapy (CRT) has been shown to improve the prognosis of patients with postoperative recurrent esophageal cancer [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. At our institution, CRT including prospective study is actively performed for postoperative locoregional recurrent esophageal cancer.…”

“…EMR alone could not be curative treatment compared to esophagectomy with lymph-node dissection in treatment for esophageal SCC with submucosal invasion. The present cases were treated with chemotherapy or radiochemotherapy, which have been demonstrated to show some efficacy for advanced carcinoma [2,4,17,18,21]. Chemotherapy was performed in principle if lymphatic invasion was found in the resected specimen or lymph-node metastasis was detected in this study.…”
