Neck circumference associated with arterial blood pressures and hypertension: A cross-sectional community-based study in northern Han Chinese

Abstract: Although several studies have investigated the associations of neck circumference (NC) with arterial blood pressures (BPs) and hypertension, no such studies have been conducted among Northern Chinese population. Between April and June 2015, a total of 2631 subjects aged ≥35 years old were recruited from Northeastern China. NC and arterial BPs were measured by trained personnel. Generalized linear and logistic regression analyses were applied to examine the associations of NC with arterial BPs and hypertension … Show more

“…On the contrary, some studies suggest that overall adiposity may be more important than central adiposity for blood pressure; suggesting that the predictors for blood pressure may be somewhat different from those for IABPD. Also, NC is highly correlated with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, a well‐known cardiovascular risk factor . NC showed the strongest association with IAS and IAD.…”

“…Also, NC is highly correlated with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, a well-known cardiovascular risk factor. 37 NC showed the strongest association with IAS and IAD. This is in concordance with our previous study reporting that NC might be a better predictor of cardio-metabolic risk.…”

“…Beside anthropometric indices, other factors may influence the NC values such as blood parameters of the children. For example, high blood pressure was reported to be associated with high NC but not with BMI, WC and WHR (Fan et al, 2017) Therefore, it is recommended that NC can be used as a tool to assess the risk of hypertension among children which, however, did not determine in the current study.…”

“…Furthermore, despite the fact of the study population been composed predominantly of women (n = 88), both women and man presented similar proportions of the number of individuals with association of PWV with some anthropometric or body composition measurements, such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio, among others [25][26][27][28][29], as well as with cardiovascular risk factors in different populations [28][29][30][31][32][33]. However, the associations of PWV status with NC measurements has not been systematically explored, despite the fact that they are both tools which help to identify the chances of cardiovascular events and potentially predict worst outcomes [17,31,32,34]. Moreover, NC and PWV measurements have other important features in common, such as good reproducibility and accuracy, especially when compared to other methods [6,8,13,14,28].…”
