This paper presents a method to detect transient disturbances in a multivariate context, and an extension of that method to handle multi-rate systems. Both methods are based on a time series analysis technique known as nearest neighbors, and on multivariate statistics implemented as a singular value decomposition. The motivation for these developments is that there is an increasing industrial requirement for the analysis of data sets comprising measurements from industrial processes together with their associated electrical and mechanical equipment. These systems are increasingly affected by transient disturbances, and their measurements are commonly sampled at different rates. The paper demonstrates superior results with the multivariate method in comparison to the univariate approach, and with the multi-rate method in comparison to a uni-rate method, for which the fast-sampled measurements had to be downsampled. The method is demonstrated on experimental and industrial case studies.

In this article, a two‐layer control strategy is proposed for industrial processes where loop controllers are difficult to change. The upper layer performs the determination of the target value and the dynamic adjustment of the set points, while the lower layer realizes the tracking control of loop outputs. To optimize the performance index, observers are designed to estimate those uncertain external disturbances and a new set points adjuster is designed to minimize the influence of disturbances on the overall performance. It is noted that neither the loop structure nor the loop parameters are changed in the operational control. Finally, a simulation on coke oven gas system is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method.

Summary This paper is concerned with optimal operational control problems that exist in industries. The performance index is optimized by set points reselection on the operational control layer together with controllers design on the loop control layer. Firstly, the operational indices need to be obtained through some optimization algorithms. Secondly, the widely used PID controllers are adopted to achieve performance optimization in the ideal situation. To minimize performance deterioration caused by harmonic disturbances, the disturbance observer–based optimal setting control is proposed for those industrial processes with nonlinear loops. In the proposed method, the controller structure or parameter is never changed, which is accordant with actual industrial conditions. Finally, numerical simulations are given to demonstrate the effectiveness and convenience of the results.
