Near-threshold study of Xe3dphotoionization

Abstract: The 3d photoelectron spectrum of xenon has been measured at several photon energies in the immediate threshold region. The absolute photoionization cross section and angular anisotropy parameter ␤ have been determined for the two spin-orbit-split components. The experimental results are compared with calculations using a relaxed single-channel approximation. In agreement with theory, most abrupt changes in cross section and angular distribution are observed just above threshold. However, the Xe 3d 5/2 photoion… Show more

“…The latter finding could at first suggest that similar correlation effects take place between the 1 A 1 and 3 A 1 exit channels in NO 2 , whose energy separation of about 0.7 eV is determined by the ex- change interaction. However, in the present case the existence of two separate resonances cannot be simply assumed, in contrast to the Xe case [55,56], since the resonant enhancements in the 1 A 1 and 3 A 1 exit channels are experimentally found to be very close in energy.…”

“…In case (b) it is still reasonable to assume that interchannel coupling can potentially affect the distribution of oscillator strength between the two resonant continua, compared to a single-channel treatment, therefore in a manner similar to that found in Xe [55,56].…”

“…Different calculations demonstrated the important role played by multielectron correlations in photoionization and established that they can be taken into account accurately within the framework of the random phase approximation with exchange (RPAE) and some of its generalized versions, e.g., the GR-PAE [7]. Recently, another example of the leveraging role of the spin-orbit interaction was found [8,9]; namely, it was demonstrated experimentally that there exists a strong interaction between the components of the spin-orbit doublet of the 3d electrons in Xe through the recent observation of an extra maximum in the Xe 3d 5/2 partial cross section in the vicinity of the 3d 3/2 ionization threshold [8]. This additional maximum was explained as due to the action of 3d 3/2 upon 3d 5/2 electrons.…”
