Near-Threshold Production ofωMesons in theppppωReaction

Abstract: The total cross section for ω production in the pp → ppω reaction has been measured at five c.m. excess energies from 3.8 to 30 MeV. The energy dependence is easily understood in terms of a strong protonproton final state interaction combined with a smearing over the width of the state. The ratio of near-threshold φ and ω production is consistent with the predictions of a one-pion-exchange model and the degree of violation of the OZI rule is similar to that found in the π − p → nω/φ reactions.

“…The calculated angular differential cross sections of the π − p → nφ reaction at ∆s (We would like to mention here, that the extrapolated value of the φ production cross section in NN reactions [16] from the data [10] would require somewhat different parameter sets, which in turn cause also more pronounced differences between the sets A and B.) Contrary to that, for the model C the largest destructive interference appears at forward direction, where the contributions of the two competing channels (a) and (b) are close to each other.…”

“…As compared to the ω cross section, the φ meson which couples to the strangeness content of the nucleon should be strongly suppressed by the OZI rule which forbids disconnected quark line diagrams. The assumption of only a small OZI violation leads to a φ over ω ratio of ∼ 4 · 10 −3 in pp reactions at comparable excess energies [10] while experimentally this ratio was found to be about one order of magnitude larger [7,8,11].…”

“…This is due to the small ω width of 8.4 MeV which allows an identification of the narrow ω peak in missing mass spectra already close to threshold. Data for the ω production in proton-proton (pp → ppω) collisions at small excess energies were recently taken at SATURNE [7] and with the COSY-TOF spectrometer [8]. The excess energy ǫ is thereby defined as ǫ = √ s − (2m p + m ω ) with √ s being the protonproton center-of-mass energy, m p the proton mass and m ω = 782 MeV the physical ω mass at its pole value.…”
