Near Real Time GPS Water Vapor Monitoring for Numerical Weather Prediction in Germany

Abstract: Within the framework of the Helmholtz Association Strategy Project ''GPS Atmosphere Sounding'' (GASP), an operational monitoring of integrated water vapor was established using 170 GPS sites in Germany and neighboring countries. The product, which can be obtained within 12-15 minutes of computer time on a single Linux PC, is generated each hour with a 30-minute time resolution and an accuracy of G1-2 mm in the precipitable water vapor. The GPS estimates are regularly validated using collocated instruments and … Show more

“…The values are small in all situations and lie inside the GPS uncertainty of 1-2 kg m −2 (Gendt et al, 2004) and the MWR product of ∼ 0.5-1 kg m −2 (Steinke et al, 2015). While the only-MWR case presents a negative bias of ∼ 0.5 kg m −2 , the inclusion of the RL in the RL+MWR case corrects this bias, reducing it 1 order of magnitude.…”

“…GPS processing systems (e.g. Dick et al, 2001;Gendt et al, 2004) estimated several atmospheric parameters, such as STD, ZTD, and IWV under all weather conditions. STD data were available within short processing times for real-time data assimilation (Zus et al, 2008;Bauer et al, 2010).…”

“…After collecting the data of GPS stations which were operated off-line and getting access to observations from other GPS providers not related to COPS, the total number of stations could be increased to more than 370 whereof 48 are located in the COPS region. These data were reprocessed by the GFZ using the GPS processing software EPOS (Gendt et al, 2004). To derive IWV, further surface meteorological observations are required (Dick et al, 2001).…”
