Near nerve potencial of sural nerve in leprosy

Abstract: -Leprosy neuropathy is characterized by initial involvement of the small nerve fibers, later followed by involvement of the large fibers, when routine nerve conduction studies become abnormal. To increase the diagnostic yield and precocity of these studies, we applied the near nerve technique to the sural nerve of 8 leprosy patients. Contrary to our expectations, the main component of the sural nerve sensory action potential was abnormal in all patients, but the minimum conduction velocity originating from sma… Show more

“…Considering the polymorphic aspect of leprosy neuropathy, diagnosis may be difficult even in countries with high incidence rates. Clinical findings, electrophysiological tests and nerve sonographic characteristics of leprosy neuropathy have been described previously (Grimaud et al 2000, Martinoli et al 2000, Marques et al 2003, Arruda et al 2004, Elias Jr et al 2009, Bathala et al 2012.…”

“…The main objectives of all leprosy health programs are to stop transmission and prevent impairment, disability, and deformity related to nerve damage by identifying patients who are in the early stage of neural involvement for treatment. Neurophysiology [6][7][8] and, to a lesser extent, imaging [9][10][11] have been applied to survey, qualify, and estimate nerve damage in leprosy. However, to the best of our knowledge, those features have not been analyzed together.…”
