Near‐Infrared Thermochromic Diazapentalene Dyes

Abstract: A series of 2,5-diazapentalene containing dyes with tunable energy gaps are visible and near-infrared halochromic towards various acids and their protonated counterparts represent a new class of thermochromic materials with the near-infrared absorption being switched on at room temperature and off above 50 °C.

“…Although there are many thermochromic polymers and liquid crystals that are used for temperature sensing, 245,246 the broadband infrared properties relevant for thermal emission are typically much less affected by temperature. 247 Likewise, though metamaterials displaying temperature-dependent resonance or narrowband absorption phenomena have also been developed, 248,249 broadband phenomena are required to switch tot and affect the heat transfer.…”

“…Most DPP‐containing polymers have relatively wide bandgaps, above 1.2 eV. Recently, we modified the DPP structure and obtained a more electron‐deficient DAP unit 44–46. The lactam in DPP can be transformed into the two lactim chromophores, PPO and DAPO (Figure ).…”

“…Recently, we modified the DPP structure and obtained a more electron-deficient DAP unit. [44][45][46] The lactam in DPP can be transformed into the two lactim chromophores, PPO and DAPO (Figure 16). By analogy, dithioketopyrrolopyrrole (DTPP), derived from DPP by thionation, can also yield two new chromophores, PPT and DAP.…”
