Near‐infrared spectroscopy for metabolite quantification and species identification

Abstract: Near‐infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a high‐throughput method to analyze the near‐infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. It detects the absorption of light by molecular bonds and can be used with live insects. In this study, we investigate the accuracy of NIR spectroscopy in determining triglyceride level and species of wild‐caught Drosophila. We employ the chemometric approach to produce a multivariate calibration model. The multivariate calibration model is the mathematical relationship between the … Show more

“…45,46 The wavelengths in the range of 1320-1380 nm can be attributed to the third overtone and the combination of C-H stretching vibrations. 47 The wavelengths in the range of 1430-1560 nm are due to the rst overtone of the O-H stretching vibrations. These may be related to the compounds contained in Radix Glycyrrhizae, such as glycyrrhizin, glycyrrhetinic acid and liquiritigenin.…”

“…Therefore, increasing the variability in calibration data should mask constituents linked with community-specific interactions, and lead to detection of wavelength combinations predictive of species identity across populations. While diet, habitat use and gut morphology of microtine rodents show high levels of plasticity (Lovegrove, 2010; Soininen et al, 2013), a growing body of fNIRS research (Douglas R. Tolleson, 2010; Vance, Tolleson, Kinoshita, Rodriguez, & Foley, 2016; Aw & Ballard, 2019) suggests that robust species-specific markers are also likely to exist.…”
