Near-infrared spectroscopy as a tool for in vivo analysis of human muscles

Abstract: Recent advances in materials and fabrication techniques provided portable, performant, sensing optical spectrometers readily operated by user-friendly cabled or wireless systems. Such systems allow rapid, non-invasive, and not destructive quantitative analysis of human tissues. This proof-of-principle investigation tested whether infrared spectroscopy techniques, currently utilized in a variety of areas, could be applied in living humans to categorize muscles. Using an ASD FieldSpec® 4 Standard-Res Spectroradi… Show more

“…It is well known that the ability of an NIR model to discriminate or identify samples is based on the vibrational responses of specific chemical bonds to NIR radiation. It is highly probable that the higher the variability in these chemical entities, which respond to this range of the electromagnetic spectrum, the better the accuracy of the model developed (Currà et al 2019 ). However, the application of NIR to monitor E .…”

“…In order to emphasize the spectral differences between PET and contaminants, three sets of preprocessing techniques were used, that is: appropriate number of latent variables (LVs) (Figure S1). The optimal number of LVs was also determined by the smaller difference between RMSEC and RMSECV [56][57][58].…”

“…Visible and NIR spectroscopy techniques are actually utilized to perform both qualitative and quantitative analysis in different fields: i.e. in primary/secondary raw materials sector [4] , [5] , in cultural heritage [6] , [7] , in the agricultural and food industry [8] , [9] , [10] , [11] , [12] , [13] , in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry [14] , [15] , in clinical application [16] , [17] , [18] and more generally in analytical science [19] to perform systematic environmental remote and proximal sensing. In this data descriptor, reflectance Visible (Vis) and Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) spectra of pre-cooked pasta products are reported.…”
