Near-infrared measurements of brain oxygenation in stroke

Abstract: Abstract. We investigated the feasibility of using frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (fdNIRS) to study brain oxygenation in the first few hours of stroke onset. The OxiplexTS ® fdNIRS system was used in this study. Using a standard probing protocol based on surface landmarks, we measured brain tHb and S t O 2 in healthy volunteers, cadavers, and acute stroke patients within 9 h of stroke onset and 3 days later. We obtained measurements from 11 controls, 5 cadavers, and 5 acute stroke patients. S t O … Show more

“…[7,8] Stroke occurs due to the following risk factors: overweight, aged 55 years or older, a personal history of stroke, an inactive lifestyle and a tendency to drink alcohol, smoke. [9,10] The symptoms of stroke includes; weakness of limb, sensory deficits, aphasia, dysphagia, visual field deficit, coordination problems and cognitive impairment. [11] Furthermore, depression, and lower physical activity are common symptoms in stroke survivors.…”

“…Not surprisingly, rSO2 values were significantly higher above the affected hemisphere compared to the contralateral side. This finding is probably explained by the presence of still highly oxygenated blood within the brain tissue (12). Table 3 highlights the most important findings of previous NIRS studies.…”

“…These features are summarized inTable 1(3,12). Combined effect of the listed factors can sometimes make the interpretation of NIRS measurements uncertain.…”

“…The normal functioning of various tissues and organs in the human body is dependent on the efficient delivery of oxygen. Tissue oximetry techniques are increasingly playing an important role in the assessment and monitoring of various pathologies such as in traumatic brain injury, ischemic stroke, wound healing, in cellular tracking and imaging the health of labeled cells, resuscitation approaches in critical organ beds, and for monitoring oxygen dynamics in cancer . Numerous factors can cause tissue to develop hypoxic (low oxygen tension, pO 2 ) regions such as impaired perfusion, breakdown in diffusion processes, reduced oxygen transport functionality of blood in conditions like anaemia, increased cellular cytotoxicity, and low blood pO 2 commonly seen in pulmonary diseases .…”
