Near-Infrared Imaging Polarimetry of the Star-Forming Region NGC 2024

Abstract: We conducted wide-field JHK s imaging polarimetry toward NGC 2024, which is a massive star-forming region in the Orion B cloud. We found a prominent and extended polarized nebula over NGC 2024, and constrained the location of illuminating source of the nebula through the analysis of polarization vectors. A massive star, IRS 2b with a spectral type of O8 − B2, is located in the center of the symmetric vector pattern. Five small polarized nebulae associated with YSOs are discovered on our polarization images. Th… Show more

“…We reduced the observed data in the same manner as described in Kandori et al (2007) using the Interactive Data Language (IDL) software (flat-field correction with twilight flat frames, median sky subtraction, and frame combination after registration). Note that the accuracy of calibration based on twilight flat is discussed in the Appendix of Kandori et al (2020b).…”

“…Reddening (E B V -( )) and polarization in the V-band (P V ) are correlated and can be represented by the observational upper limit relation: Serkowski et al 1975). Polarization measurements that exceed this upper limit relation are generally attributed to the intrinsic polarization (non-magnetic polarization) caused by scattered light from dust grains in circumstellar disks or envelopes around YSOs (e.g., Kandori et al 2007;Eswaraiah et al 2011Eswaraiah et al , 2012Serón Navarrete et al 2016). …”
