Miniaturized endoscopic scanners have had a significant impact on high-resolution optical imaging. Technological advancements in micro-electromechanical systems and optical fiber technology have resulted in various optical-mechanical configurations designed to fulfill specific requirements. However, it is still challenging to provide comprehensive, undistorted images with high-resolution images of target samples. This paper reviews the optical imaging techniques utilized in cantilever-based endoscopic scanners by analyzing and comparing their key performances, pros and cons, and corresponding optical components needed to develop the system. The concept of multimodal imaging is then highlighted by discussing its principle and current status in endoscopic scanners. We also reviewed the scanning configurations concerning their mechanical components, general structures, and drive signals for different scanning patterns. The feedback control aspect in endoscopic scanners is then addressed, with a discussion of its role in mitigating undesired nonlinear vibration effects and a survey of current implementations. Finally, we discuss the current and potential applications of endoscopic scanners, artificial intelligence techniques in image reconstruction, and disease detection and provide recommendations on endoscopic scanner system design for future reference.

Untreated dental decay is the most prevalent dental problem in the world, affecting up to 2.4 billion people and leading to a significant economic and social burden. Early detection can greatly mitigate irreversible effects of dental decay, avoiding the need for expensive restorative treatment that forever disrupts the enamel protective layer of teeth. However, two key challenges exist that make early decay management difficult: unreliable detection and lack of quantitative monitoring during treatment. New optically based imaging through the enamel provides the dentist a safe means to detect, locate, and monitor the healing process. This work explores the use of an augmented reality (AR) headset to improve the workflow of early decay therapy and monitoring. The proposed workflow includes two novel ARenabled features: (i) in situ visualisation of pre-operative optically based dental images and (ii) augmented guidance for repetitive imaging during therapy monitoring. The workflow is designed to minimise distraction, mitigate hand-eye coordination problems, and help guide monitoring of early decay during therapy in both clinical and mobile environments. The results from quantitative evaluations as well as a formative qualitative user study uncover the potentials of the proposed system and indicate that AR can serve as a promising tool in tooth decay management.

Dental Imaging With Near-Infrared Transillumination Using Random Fiber Laser

Contrary to the conventional detection method like radiography, the near infrared light source has been demonstrated to be suitable for dental imaging due to different reflectivity among enamel, dentin, and caries lesion. In this paper, three light sources with different bandwidths based on a transillumination method are compared. The contrast among enamel, dentin, and caries lesion is calculated in different situations. The experimental results show that the random fiber laser has the best comprehensive quality in dental imaging due to its high spectral density, low coherence, and deep penetration. This work provides a guidance for light source selection in dental imaging.
