Near Full-Length Genome Sequence of a Novel HIV-1 Recombinant Form (CRF01_AE/B) Detected Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Jilin Province, China

Abstract: We report here a novel HIV-1 recombinant form (CRF01_AE/B) detected from a comprehensive HIV-1 molecular epidemiologic study among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Jilin province of northeastern China. The near full-length genome (NFLG) analyses showed that the novel HIV-1 recombinant isolate ( JL.RF07) was composed of CRF01_AE cluster 5 (northeastern China origin) and subtype B (U.S. and European origin), with six recombinant breakpoints observed in the pol, vif, tat, rev, and env gene regions. To the best … Show more

“…This result is consistent with the findings from Ethiopia (Southern region) [11]. However, the current finding was lower when compared to studies conducted in different part of Ethiopia [12][13][14], Tanzania [15] and Zimbabwe [16]. The possible explanation for this difference might be due to the socio-demographic difference; plus this study includes all health facilities of ART clinics and uses only reproductive age women as study population.…”

“…Co‐circulation of the diverse HIV‐1 subtype prevalence greatly increases the probability of HIV‐1 recombination. Based on the CRF01_AE continuous pandemic nationwide, more and more URFs were identified with CRF01_AE as the main component to appear, such as the CRF07_ BC/01_AE and CRF01_AE/B recombination, in the MSM population from Sichuan and Jilin [Li et al, , ; Wei et al, ], as well as the population of intravenous drug users in Jiangsu [Guo et al, ]. In addition, the novel HIV‐1 circulating recombinant form (CRF65_cpx), which is comprised of CRF01_AE and subtypes B and C, was also identified in western Yunnan [Feng et al, ].…”

“…All of the recombinants are identified among heterosexuals or MSM. 12,[18][19][20] The emergence of multiple second-generation recombinants suggests the presence of complex transmission networks of different HIV subtype/CRF infections among sexual transmissions in this region. Therefore, a continuing HIV-1 molecular epidemiologic investigation is necessary to characterize the transmission networks within subtypes and CRFs, which is of great importance in understanding the dynamics of the HIV-1 epidemic in this region.…”
