Near Full-Length Genome Identification of a Novel HIV-1 Recombinant Form (CRF01_AE/B′/C) Among Heterosexuals in Jilin, China

Abstract: Recombinant forms contribute significantly to the genetic diversity of HIV-1. Here we report a novel HIV-1 recombinant form (CRF01_AE/B¢/C) detected from a comprehensive HIV-1 molecular epidemiologic study among heterosexuals in Jilin province of northeastern China. Recombinant analyses of the near full-length genome (NFLG) of the novel HIV-1 recombinant isolate ( JL.RF01) showed that the backbone of the genome was CRF01_AE, and three insertions of subtype B¢ (242, 370, and 233 bp) and C (1142, 230, and 271 bp… Show more

“…This result is consistent with the findings from Ethiopia (Southern region) [11]. However, the current finding was lower when compared to studies conducted in different part of Ethiopia [12][13][14], Tanzania [15] and Zimbabwe [16]. The possible explanation for this difference might be due to the socio-demographic difference; plus this study includes all health facilities of ART clinics and uses only reproductive age women as study population.…”

“…In recent years, many novel HIV-1 recombinant strains in heterosexuals have since been confirmed by using molecular subtyping in China [3234], suggesting that heterosexual transmission is intermixed with all other high-risk populations and contribute to the complexity of the HIV-1 epidemic. In this study, several potential HIV-1 recombinant strains may be present in some subjects.…”

“…All of the recombinants are identified among heterosexuals or MSM. 12,[18][19][20] The emergence of multiple second-generation recombinants suggests the presence of complex transmission networks of different HIV subtype/CRF infections among sexual transmissions in this region. Therefore, a continuing HIV-1 molecular epidemiologic investigation is necessary to characterize the transmission networks within subtypes and CRFs, which is of great importance in understanding the dynamics of the HIV-1 epidemic in this region.…”
