Abstract-High tech strategies such as Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing require industrial devices to be connected to the Internet. This movement towards interconnected industrial devices poses significant security risks as confidential data must be transferred and stored using untrustworthy channels and cloud servers. End-to-end private key cryptography is suitable to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of data. However, private key cryptography has some drawbacks such as the so-called key distribution problem. A possible solution, factory installed keys, are untrustworthy as the two partners relying on end-to-end cryptography can not be sure that no other party is in possession of the used keys. To overcome these problems, the Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) principle based on Near Field Communication (NFC) and dedicated secured hardware is presented in this paper.

Abstract. We provide a field study of a smartphone application and server-side software for improving the on-premises restaurant experience. To increase customer engagement, the smartphone client uses Near-Field Communication (NFC) to bootstrap the communication with the server and to localize customers to specific tables. The application further provides a complete end-to-end experience by allowing users to select food items, read micro-reviews of dishes, submit their order, and be alerted when the food is ready. We deployed our prototype system in a cafe-style restaurant in the dining commons of Stanford University and observed that the system was able to successfully streamline and enhance the dining experience for both customers and restaurant staff.

Abstract-NFC (Near Field Communication) technology allows people to integrate their daily-use loyalty cards, credit cards etc. into their mobile phones. In addition to integrating those cards into mobile devices, NFC technology brings innovation opportunities to mobile communications. It enables two users to easily communicate and exchange data simply by touching two mobile phones to each other. The aim of this paper is to perform a brief review of the published NFC applications in literature and explored the benefits of these applications by classifying them in eight service domains. We believe that this analysis will provide valuable insights for performing rigorous and business relevant research on NFC applications and its service domains.
