Near Earth Asteroid Human Mission Possibilities Using Nuclear Thermal Rocket (NTR) Propulsion

Abstract: The NTR is a proven technology that generates high thrust and has a specific impulse (I sp ~900 s) twice that of today's best chemical rockets. During the Rover and NERVA (Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Applications) programs, twenty rocket reactors were designed, built and ground tested. These tests demonstrated: (1) a wide range of thrust; (2) high temperature carbide-based nuclear fuel; (3) sustained engine operation; (4) accumulated lifetime; and (5) restart capability-all the requirements needed for a … Show more

“…In FY'12, GRC quantified the benefits of using NTP for human missions to two candidate NEAs -2000 SG344 and Apophis [15,16] using scaled-down versions of the "Copernicus" crewed Mars transfer vehicle (MTV) design developed during NASA's Mars DRA 5.0 study [17,18]. These smaller Asteroid Survey Vehicles (ASVs) had a lower IMLEO than their chemical and SEP-chemical counterparts and were also reusable.…”

“…Variations on these basic configurations have been envisioned for lunar and asteroid missions as well. [4,5,6] In Reference 4, the crewed MTV vehicle, called "Copernicus", is adapted to function as a standalone Asteroid Survey Vehicle (ASV) for a crewed expedition to a near Earth asteroid (NEA). For this configuration, dubbed "Searcher", a small 2-person pressurized excursion vehicle (MMSEV) is attached to the crewed payload element in place of the contingency consumables canister in the Mars configuration.…”

“…Among these are the Mars Design Reference Architecture (DRA 5.0), crewed missions to a near Earth asteroid (NEA), the Earth-Moon Lagrange point (EML2) and lunar cargo and crew missions. [1,2,3,4,5,6] In the early 1990s, a Fortran code was developed at NASA's then Lewis Research Center (GRC) to provide mass estimation for NTP vehicles. The code (designated MOMMA by its author, for Mark's Optimizing Mission Mass Allocator) organizes a mission as a series of phases where each phase has a duration and potentially a V and/or a change in mass due to jettison or pick up of payload.…”

“…This deficiency can be corrected through the addition of an "in-line" LH 2 tank as discussed previously. The resulting "4-element" version of Option 2 described elsewhere [31] has an IMLEO of ~347.9 t including the NTPS (~98.6 t), the in-line tank (98.2 t), the saddle truss and LH 2 drop tank (~91.3 t), and the crewed PL element (~59.8 t). The total engine burn time is ~84 minutes, and the longest single burn is again the first perigee burn at ~40.9 minutes.…”
