NCI-H292 as an alternative cell line for the isolation and propagation of the human paramyxoviruses

Abstract: Primary rhesus monkey kidney (MK) cells have long been the cells of choice for isolation and propagation of the human paramyxoviruses (parainfluenza 1, 2, 3, 4A, 4B, and mumps). However, problems with the supply and cost of MK cells and the presence of endogenous viruses, including herpes B virus and SV-5, necessitated a search for an alternative cell line. Continuous cell cultures of human origin (L132, A-549, HuT-292, HEK, G-293, G-401, A-498, A-704, CAKI-1, RD) and simian origin (LLC-MK2, BSC-1, MA-104, Ver… Show more

“…It is report ed that NCI-H292 cells are available for culture of paramy xoviruses and may be sensitive to other viruses, including influenza vims [5]. At 48-72 h after virus inoculation, cyto pathic effects, such as rounding of cells and cellular fusion, were observed in the present study.…”

“…In the present study we determined the mechanisms for IL-8 and IL-6 induction by parainfluenza virus type 4a (PIV-4). For these studies we employed human lung-derived mucoepidermoid adenocarcinoma NCI-H292 cells, which previously were shown to facilitate replication of PIV-4 without causing marked cytopathic effects (5). Moreover, the regulation of IL-8 and IL-6 production in NCI-H292 cells has been studied in detail (24,28,29,35).…”
