Nb(0.05 moles%)-zeolites prepared via a post synthesis methodology (BEA, Y, ZSM-5), or a direct sol-gel method (Silicalite-1) were investigated in the hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation by both molecular oxygen, in aqueous phase, and organic peroxides, in acetonitrile. The catalysts prepared through the post synthesis methodology (i.e., Nb-Y5, Nb-ZSM25, Nb-Y30, Nb-BEA12, and Nb-BEA18) displayed a mono-modal mesoporosity and contain residual framework Al-acid sites, extra framework isolated Nb(V)O-H and Nb2O5 pore-encapsulated clusters, while Nb-Sil-1, prepared through a direct synthesis procedure, displayed a bimodal micro-mesoporosity and contains only –Nb = O species. These modified zeolites behave as efficient catalysts in both HMF/glucose wet oxidation to succinic acid (SA) and HMF oxidation with organic peroxides to the 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). The catalytic behavior of these catalysts, in terms of conversion and especially the selectivity, mainly depended on the base/acid sites ratio. Thus, the HMF/glucose wet oxidation occurred with a total conversion and a selectivity to SA of 37.7% (from HMF) or 69.1% (from glucose) on the Nb-Y5 catalyst, i.e., the one with the lowest base/acid sites ratio. On the contrary, the catalysts with the highest base/acid sites ratio, i.e., Nb-ZSM25 and Nb-Sil-1, afforded a high catalytic efficiency in HMF oxidation with organic peroxides, in which FDCA was produced with selectivities of 61.3–63.8% for an HMF conversion of 96.7–99.0%.

Succinic acid is a “hot molecule” identified by United States Department of Energy as a substitute for petrochemicals with great scope for its production from biomass. It is used as an intermediate for the production of a huge variety of everyday consumer products with an addressable market share of billions of dollars. Succinic acid and its derivatives are mainly used as pharmaceuticals, adhesives, solvents, intermediates for polymer synthesis, and food additives. Succinic acid is commercially produced from petrochemicals and there is a deficiency of economically viable catalytic processes for its large‐scale production from biomass. Recently, a lot of biochemical routes have been devised to enhance its production from biomass resources, but such processes are time‐consuming and involve tedious separation procedures. Therefore, this Review focuses on metal‐based and metal‐free heterogeneous catalytic routes for the synthesis of succinic acid from biomass derived products. The presence of uniform channels, cavities, active sites of various strengths, and the unique surface structure of the heterogeneous catalysts are a few of the interesting features that promote their use in industrial processes.

Utilization of zeolite catalysts in biomass exploitation: a minireview

This minireview discusses the use of zeolites as catalysts in all stages of lignocellulose biomass (LCB) valorization process. A summary of some synthesis and characterization methods for zeolitic materials is provided. Utilization of various active sites of zeolites is explored with the focus on Brønsted and Lewis acid sites and the importance of hierarchical structures in the processes involving bulky biobased molecules. Zeolites modified by top-down methods, specifically desilication with various basic reagents, are good candidates for applications in LCB valorization. Some novelty methods such as a dry milling for incorporating metal nanoparticles into zeolite structure are mentioned. An overview of studies utilizing zeolites in processes such as catalytic pyrolysis of LCB, acid-catalyzed hydrolysis and reactions of platform molecules (ethanol, furans, glycerol, bio-hydrocarbons, lactic acid, succinic acid, levulinic acid, sorbitol, xylitol) is discussed. Special attention is dedicated to reactions of biomass-derived alcohols and value-added chemicals produced from them, e.g., esters. The most successful industrial zeolite application—fluid catalytic cracking—is also summarized for comparison. Challenges of zeolite stability in reactions carried out in liquid water conditions, as well as possibilities of catalyst stabilization, e.g., with extra-framework aluminum, or hydrophobization of the surface, are explored.
