Navigo: Interest forwarding by geolocations in vehicular Named Data Networking

Abstract: Abstract-This paper proposes Navigo 1 , a location based packet forwarding mechanism for vehicular Named Data Networking (NDN). Navigo takes a radically new approach to address the challenges of frequent connectivity disruptions and sudden network changes in a vehicle network. Instead of forwarding packets to a specific moving car, Navigo aims to fetch specific pieces of data from multiple potential carriers of the data. The design provides (1) a mechanism to bind NDN data names to the producers' geographic ar… Show more

“…In [8], Grassi et al proposed Navigo, an interest forwarding scheme in NDN. In Navigo, each vehicle that has received or generated an interest forwards it based on the shortest path between the location where it exists and the location where many vehicles having the demanded data exist.…”

“…The applicability of NDN in vehicular networks has been investigated in recent years [4,24,25]. Indeed, NDN receiver-driven connectionless communications, based on the exchange of two packet types-called Interest and Data-and pervasive in-network caching particularly suit the vehicular ecosystem.…”

“…Finally, in [24], the concept of "geo-faces" is introduced: content names are bound to the providers' geographic area(s), and Interests are forwarded towards such area(s) by using a shortest path algorithm over the road topology. When a geo-face is not present for content, flooding is performed.…”

“…Literature on the use of ICN for spatial services is very limited, does not concern database applications, and is mainly focused on vehicular services. In [11] authors propose to label geographical areas with names and use a routing-by-name schemes to carry out location based forwarding in VANET environment. We label geographical areas too, but with the different goal of routing spatial queries.…”
