Navigating the Challenges of Prison Research With Women

Abstract: Despite the healthcare needs of an increasing number of incarcerated women in the United States, few researchers access this underserved population. The authors provide practical information to help novice researchers navigate potential institutional challenges including obtaining institutional review board approval, gaining entry, complying with rules and regulations, recruiting and retaining participants, and collecting data.

“…A number of researchers have discussed the methodological challenges experienced in conducting research in correctional facilities [ 19 , 20 ]. The following challenges confronted the researchers in the implementation of this study: (1) Although participants had release dates in place, some inmates were released earlier than expected or transferred to the minimum facility; (2) Maintaining a consistent and appropriate space for this type of group was an ongoing issue.…”

“…In all, the aforementioned study limitations underscore the logistical challenges and complexities of applied offender research within criminal justice field settings, such as prisons. Such challenges range from obtaining access and clearance from the institution, to navigating institutional politics, rules, and procedures, managing (often unexpected) program attrition from different sources, and the institution's overarching objective to maintain tight security and control for the safety of staff and inmates (Ferszt & Chambers, 2011). This clinical-environmental-methodological context provides an important backdrop for the efforts of trying to provide clinically appropriate services to support a rehabilitative mandate and, when possible, to evaluate the effectiveness of program initiatives to achieve this.…”

“…Experience dictates that DOCs are risk aversion institutions so it is vital to carefully plan to allay DOC's concerns regarding information shared with others. Finally, adherence to standard ethical practices that protect offender information, and obtaining a Certificate of Confidentiality that provided the researcher with the right to resist most legal requests for disclosure of offender information, enhanced the first author's credibility (Ferszt & Chambers, 2011).…”
