Navigating surgical fluorescence cameras using near-infrared optical tracking

Abstract: Fluorescence guidance facilitates real-time intraoperative visualization of the tissue of interest. However, due to attenuation, the application of fluorescence guidance is restricted to superficial lesions. To overcome this shortcoming, we have previously applied three-dimensional surgical navigation to position the fluorescence camera in reach of the superficial fluorescent signal. Unfortunately, in open surgery, the near-infrared (NIR) optical tracking system (OTS) used for navigation also induced an interf… Show more

“…Optical technologies such as fluorescence imaging does not require direct contact with tissue for a light source to excite fluorophore molecules and a detector to collect the light that is subsequently emitted [ 136 ]. Since light sources including ambient light [ 137 ], plenum light [ 138 ] and light emitted by optical tracking systems [ 139 ] can interfere with signal detection, fluorescence applications often require dimming of interfering light sources such as the operating room (OR) lights. Radioguidance modalities are purely designed to detect radiopharmaceuticals that intrinsically generate a signal (i.e., gamma rays or beta particles).…”

“…To evaluate the sufficient fluorescent SBR needed for robotic surgery, we created a custom silicone (4 × 7) grid-phantom setup (Dragon Skin FXPro silicone, mixed with coloring pigment, FormX, Amsterdam, the Netherlands) that contained 28 possible target locations that could be sealed off with silicone lids. As targets we used 33.33 µL fluorescent beads [ 37 ], containing different concentrations of ICG (1–0.0625 mg/mL dissolved in methanol) incorporated in epoxy resin (ratio: 1:6:1 for epoxy resin, epoxy hardener and ICG solution, respectively).…”
