Nature of ergastic substances in some mediterranean angiospermous seeds — VI

Abstract: The ergastic substances of 394 temperate angiospermous seed samples belonging to 49 families have been investigated. Starch grains have been recorded in 24 taxa distributed in Acanthaceae (1), Caryophyllaceae (13), Chenopodiaceae (2), Primulaceae (2), Umbelliferae (4), Solanaceae (1) and Passifloraceae (1). Although there is no relationship between starch grain characteristics and phylogenetic position of the taxa investigated, the occurrence of starch grains is associated with herbaceous habit. Alkaloids, fat… Show more

“…Tests for various ergastic substances; fats and oils, protein, tannins, inulin and starch were analyzed according to Gill et al (1991) and Idu and Onyibe (2011). Starch granule characteristics; granule shape, granule size, hilium striations and hilium size were recorded to the nearest decimal (0.00 µm).…”

“…In the literature on ergastic substances, it is seen that researches are carried out in the fields of biotechnology (Idu & Onyibe, 2011;Kolovrat, 2016), botany (Gill, Nyawuame, Aibangbee & Agho, 1991;Nwachukwu & Edeoga, 2006;Omonhinmin, Daramola & Idu, 2015;Scott, 1941) and medicine (Nayagam, 2015;Simon & Nayyagam, 2018). However, no studies on the subject were reached in the field of education.…”
