Tourism boosts the regional economy and encompasses various sectors that determine its potential, promoting economic, environmental and social development by generating the creation of small and medium-sized enterprises and employment, thus improving people’s quality of life. In this context, an analysis of the structural changes in the number of visitors to the Kuélap archaeological site in the region of Amazonas, Peru was conducted. The closure of the Kuélap Monumental Archaeological Zone was selected as the object of analysis since the Kuélap archaeological site constitutes the most prominent tourist resource in the department of Amazonas and is the main attraction for tourists to visit. This study was carried out by using an analytical and descriptive approach, with a non-experimental longitudinal and cross-sectional design. Data from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) were used, and the perspective of tourism providers by means of a survey applied to a sample of 83 entrepreneurs in Chachapoyas, Tingo and La Malca was analysed. The results show that the implementation of cable cars in Kuélap has had a positive impact of 54% on sales and employment, while the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact of 81%. On the other hand, the closure of the archaeological site has had a negative impact of 52%. Any negative impact on the Kuélap archaeological site resulted in a slowdown in the regional economy. In conclusion, from the point of view of visitor records and the perspective of tourism providers regarding structural changes, social impact is reflected in different economic sectors and, therefore, in the development of the local and regional economy. It is essential to consider these aspects when making decisions and developing strategies to promote tourism in the region in order to improve the quality of life of its residents (social, economic and cultural well-being).

It is of great significance to explore the impact of tourism development on the neighboring economy. The Lijiang Ancient City (LAC) is a World Cultural Heritage Site and one of the important tourist destinations in China. However, the impact of an urban tourism boom on farmers' income in neighboring rural communities is not clear. Drawing on a comprehensive dataset of 672 field surveys conducted between 2009 and 2016 in the Lashihai watershed of Yunnan Province, China, we produce compelling evidence indicating that the tourism boom in the LAC has had a positive impact on farmers' income in neighboring rural communities. Our findings reveal that increasing per capita income in nearby communities by about 6.99% to 8.55% for every 10% increase in tourism activity; however, this impact diminishes as the distance to the LAC increases. Furthermore, the tourism boom has facilitated a harmonious and mutually beneficial coexistence between agriculture and tourism in neighboring communities, leading to the enhancement of farmers' livelihood strategies and expanded employment opportunities. Additionally, notable disparities in the economic impacts of the LAC tourism boom. Both non‐poor farmers and those with higher social capital have experienced a positive increase in income. The effect on income is more pronounced for farmers residing in closer proximity to Lashihai lake, compared with those residing farther away. This study provides an empirical basis for promoting synergistic urban–rural development and rural revitalization.

The application of machine learning techniques in the field of tourism is experiencing a remarkable growth, as they allow to propose efficient solutions to problems present in this sector, by means of an intelligent analysis of data in their specific context. The increase of work in this field requires an exhaustive analysis through a quantitative approach of research activity, contributing to a deeper understanding of the progress of this field. Thus, different approaches in the field of tourism will be analyzed, such as planning, forecasting, recommendation, prevention, and security, among others. As a result of this analysis, among other findings, the greater impact of supervised learning in the field of tourism, and more specifically those techniques based on neural networks, has been confirmed.
