Naturally Occurring Simple Oxygenated Benzophenones: Structural Diversity, Distribution, and Biological Properties

Teodor Marinov,
Zlatina Kokanova-Nedialkova,
Paraskev T. Nedialkov

Abstract: Naturally occurring benzophenones represent a relatively small group of plant metabolites with narrow distribution, mainly in members of Clusiaceae, Gentianaceae, Hypericaceae, Polygalaceae, Myrtaceae, etc.; however, there were reports of several compounds derived from microorganisms belonging to the Aspergillaceae and Valsaceae families and propolis. Benzophenones exhibit many biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, etc. Few reviews on benzophenones that have a… Show more

“…In summary, six benzophenone derivatives (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6) and seven known compounds were obtained from sponge-derived fungus Aspergillus carneus GXIMD00543. Compounds 5, 6, 8, and 11 exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting NO secretion using LPS induced RAW 264.7 cells.…”

“…More than 300 benzophenone derivatives have been isolated from plants and fungi. They exhibit great structural diversity, which is attributed to protons replaced by hydroxyl, alkyl, alkyloxy groups, or halogen atoms [6,7]. Owing to their variable substituents, many benzophenone derivatives show a range of biological activities including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiviral effects [8].…”
