Naturally Derived Photoinitiators for Dental and Biomaterials Applications

Abstract: Biocompatibility of materials used in dental and biomaterials applications is very important and depends on the components of these materials. Photopolymerized materials for dental and biomaterials applications have been progressively used since the 1970s. One of the crucial components in these materials is the photoinitiator (PI) that initiates the polymerization reaction. Synthetic PIs are the most commonly used types, but owing to their drawbacks such as cytotoxicity, insolubility in water, and high cost, r… Show more

“…For more detailed information about natural photoinitiators, readers are referred to Abdul-Monem. [60] Before selecting a photoinitiator, it is crucial to be aware of the wavelength of the intended UV source to choose the photoinitiator accordingly. Recommended photoinitiators for medical and related applications are biocompatible, soluble in water (biological fluid), and must be non-cytotoxic or possess an acceptable level of cytotoxicity.…”

“…Once the dyes are incorporated in the photoinduced and reticulated polymer material, the visible light activation of the material may generate on its surface biocide ROS species responsible for the death of bacteria. In this respect, natural resources can be valorised as monomers, just as discussed previously, but also as promising photo-initiating systems: natural dyes compete with synthetic ones for initiation of polymerization under visible-light activation 211,212 .…”

“…Studies on naphthoquinone derivatives as Type II PIs (multicomponent photoinitiating systems) were reported recently. [23][24][25] In the present work, a series of naphthoquinone esters, namely 4,9-dioxo-2-phenyl-4,9-dihydro-1H-naphtho [2,3-d]imidazol-1-yl esters, never synthesized previously according to the literature, were investigated and proposed as high-performance Type I PIs (see Scheme 1). More precisely, various acid chlorides could be used to form esters with 1-hydroxy-2-phenyl-1H-naphtho [2,3-d] imidazole-4,9-dione, enabling the facile preparation of a series of imidazolyl esters.…”
