Natural Ventilated Smoke Control Simulation Case Study Using Different Settings of Smoke Vents and Curtains in a Large Atrium

Abstract: In this study, a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) based fire field model was applied to numerically investigate the effectiveness of smoke control using smoke vents and curtains within a large-scale atrium fire. Two compartment configurations were considered: the first case with no smoke curtains installed, while the second case included a smoke curtain at the centre of the compartment to trap smoke. Based on the thermocouple results, it was found that the model predicted the gas temperature near the fire particula… Show more

“…This method has been developed and applied in studying the mechanical properties, and many FEA packages such as ABAQUS, LS-DYNA, RADIOSS were used to model the material structure. Computation fluid dynamics (CFD) is a practical tool to study different thermal fluid dynamic parameters and simulate multiple physics fields [ 21 , 22 , 23 ], and CFD makes it possible to use the equations governing a fluid motion for an extensive range of complex situations, providing both insight and quantitative predictions. CFD simulation can provide detailed information about the electrical and thermal field inside the battery that is often difficult to be assessed by experimental means.…”

“…In order to reduce the computational effort and maintain a good accuracy of the obtained results, a mesh with 1,492,736 elements (M 2 ) was chosen to be used in the simulations of the other cases under study. Thus, the present work uses a uniform mesh with an element size of approximately 14.26 cm, more refined than the values used by Qin et al [12], Abotaleb [16] and Yuen et al [17] in their researches. “…Large eddy simulation (LES) and the wall-adapting local eddy-viscosity (WALE) function, is adopted as the turbulence model to describe the turbulent reaction flow behaviour. This turbulence model has been extensively validated and proved to be a valid approach for resolving various wall-bounded turbulence flow applications with a reasonable computational course [8,43,[50][51][52][53][54].…”
