Natural variability has dominated Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation since 1900

Abstract: There is debate about slowing of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a key component of the global climate system. Some focus is on the sea surface temperature (SST) slightly cooling in parts of the subpolar North Atlantic despite widespread ocean warming. Atlantic SST is influenced by the AMOC, especially on decadal timescales and beyond. The local cooling could thus reflect AMOC slowing and diminishing heat transport, consistent with climate model responses to rising atmospheric greenhous… Show more

“…There is currently no consensus on whether the AMOC has declined since the 1990s (see, for example, Jackson et al, 2022;Latif et al, 2022, for summaries of the debate). Models and proxies suggest a decline (e.g.…”

“…EC-Earth3-LR and the two models by FGOALS are the exceptions, but they do not provide coherent message about the response to increasing orbital forcing. Therefore, we consider these to be different samples from the same underlying distribution (Latif et al, 2022).…”

“…The earth has undergone tremendous changes since industrial civilization, and among these, climate change is one of the most obvious phenomena (IPCC, 2022). The average temperature of the earth has raised for nearly 1.5 °C since 1900, which results in many catastrophes such as floods and droughts (Latif et al, 2022). Climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) is a key issue for sustainable development all over the world (Mooney and Sjogersten, 2022).…”
