GangesAlaknanda Terrestrial gamma radiation Health hazard a b s t r a c t Direct measurement of absorbed dose rate in air due to exposure from outdoor terrestrial g radiation and assessment of consequent public health hazard continues to be of environmental and public concern. Present study was aimed to establish a baseline data of annual effective dose and to assess the associated health risk from outdoor terrestrial g radiation along the river Alaknanda and Ganges of India. Terrestrial g radiation exposure doses (excluding cosmic radiation) were measured using a Plastic Scintillation Counter.Absorbed dose rates in air were measured at eight designated locations from Nandprayag to Allahabad along the river. From the average absorbed dose rates, annual effective dose (AED) and excess life time cancer risks (ELCR) were calculated by standard method. Results showed that absorbed dose rates in air ranged between 81.33 ± 2.34 nSv.h À1 and 144 ± 5.77 nSv.h À1 and calculated AED ranged between 0.10 ± 0.012 mSv.y À1 to 0.18 ± 0.007 mSv.y À1 at the designated locations along these rivers. Calculated ELCR were found in the range of 0.375 Â 10 À3 to 0.662 Â 10 À3 . Present study measured the outdoor g radiation levels along the rivers. The calculated annual effective doses and life time cancer risk were found higher than the world average value at higher altitudes. But the measured doses and calculated risks at plains were close to that of reported average values.

In this study, measurement of natural radioactivity and analyses of physical properties of soil were carried on great soil groups around the Seferihisar Geothermal Region. The radioactivity levels in soils were analyzed using scintillation gamma spectroscopy. The activity concentrations for 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K range from 7.1 to 32.0 Bq kg -1 , 15.2 to 35.9 Bq kg -1 and 223.1 to 802.2 Bq kg -1 , respectively. Obtained data was compared with average values given by UNSCEAR and the other studies. The radium equivalent activity (Ra eq ) in soil samples ranges from 42.2 to 144.7 Bq kg -1 which are lower than the suggested maximal admissible value of 370 Bq kg -1 recommended by OECD. In addition, the value of external exposure dose has been determined from the content of natural radionuclides in soil. The absorbed dose rates change between 20.6 and 70.9 nGy h -1 with a mean value of 46.7 nGy h -1 which is lower than the global average value of 55 nGy h -1 . The annual effective dose rates varied from 25.2 to 87.0 lSv year -1 with an average value of 57.3 lSv year -1 . Obviously, all the calculated values were lower than this value, and therefore the environment of Tuzla Fault can be regarded as an area with normal natural background radiation.

Gamma dose rates in a uranium site in Guangdong, China were measured based on different functioning areas (mining area, milling area, tailings area and downstream area); four representative soil profiles were measured with HP Ge gamma spectrometry. The gamma dose rates as well as annual effective dose overall exceeded the relevant values reported from other countries. Both the external and the internal hazard index overwhelmingly exceeded the recommended value. Some areas were heavily polluted with technologically elevated concentrations of 238 U and 226 Ra, while others were observed with extremely high background level of natural radioactivity, mainly stemming from granitic lithology.
