Natural products targeting cellular processes common in Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis

Abstract: The hallmarks of Parkinson's disease (PD) include the loss of dopaminergic neurons and formation of Lewy bodies, whereas multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder with damaged myelin sheaths and axonal loss. Despite their distinct etiologies, mounting evidence in recent years suggests that neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and infiltration of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) all play crucial roles in both diseases. It is also recognized that therapeutic advances against one neurodegenerative disorder a… Show more

“…It is also possible that ellagic acid reduces oxidative stress and apoptosis by reducing Th17 cells and IL-17 cytokine levels in oligodendrocytes. By decreasing IL-17 levels, ellagic acid also facilitates the regeneration process of myelin and removes obstacles to the maturation of oligodendrocytes and increases their survival ( 66 , 67 ).…”

“…Similarly, curcumin (a polyphenol extract from turmeric) modulates T-cell differentiation, thereby diminishing the clinical severity of EAE. [344] In recent years, liposomes have been broadly used in MS management, especially in early detection and prognosis. Overall, removing apoptotic cells is critical in cases of the loss of selftolerance-triggering autoimmune diseases (e.g., MS).…”

“…have been discovered from natural sources for their antimicrobial, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and chemoprotective activities. There is considerable evidence to suggest that these phytochemicals are beneficial to health on an epidemiological and clinical level ( Chan et al, 2023 ; Du et al, 2023 ; Rahaman et al, 2023 ; Xu et al, 2023 ; Zhou et al, 2023 ; Zhu et al, 2023 ).…”
