Natural Products in Cancer Therapy: Past, Present and Future

Abstract: Natural products, with remarkable chemical diversity, have been extensively investigated for their anticancer potential for more than a half-century. The collective efforts of the community have achieved the tremendous advancements, bringing natural products to clinical use and discovering new therapeutic opportunities, yet the challenges remain ahead. With remarkable changes in the landscape of cancer therapy and growing role of cutting-edge technologies, we may have come to a crossroads to revisit the strate… Show more

“…These efforts resulted in the discovery and development of a group of promising anticancer therapeutics. In the last three decades, about 25% of all newly approved anticancer drugs were of natural origin [ 1 , 2 ]. Furthermore, many anticancer compounds with unique structural advantages in probing druggable modalities have been reported.…”

“…Natural products have played an important role in treating a variety of diseases [10][11][12]. Among them, many anti-cancer drugs currently used clinically are derived from plants or are derivatives of natural products [13][14][15]. Betulinic acid (BA), a kind of naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid, is widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom, and is particularly abundant in the bark of the birch tree (Betula sp.)…”

“…The natural compounds-based treatment has paid attention in scientists in the last 2 decades as an efficient and possibly less toxic therapy for cancer (Kumar et al, 2020;Lin et al, 2020;Aziz et al, 2021;Huang et al, 2021). Long years ago, American Indians had used Podophyllum peltatum L. roots for the treatment of various skin cancers (Mann, 2002).…”
