Natural products containing ‘decalin’ motif in microorganisms

Abstract: Microorganisms are well-known producers of a wide variety of bioactive compounds that are utilized not only for their primary metabolism but also for other purposes such as defense, detoxification, or communication with other micro- and macro-organisms. Natural products containing a 'decalin ring' occur often in microorganisms. They exhibit diverse and remarkable biological activities, including antifungal, antibacterial, anticancer and immunosuppressive activities, to name a few. This review surveys the natur… Show more

“…They are of great interest due to their diverse bioactive properties as antibiotics and immunosuppressives [1]. The decalin core is hypothesized to result from an enzymatically guided Diels-Alder cycloaddition event, although only a limiting number of possible Diels-Alderases have been identified [2].…”

“…Zosteropenillines A–L ( 1 – 12 ) belong to the series of lovastatin-related polyketides that are formed by an enzymatic intramolecular Diels–Alder cycloaddition of a linear hexaketide precursor [20,21,22]. Polyketides containing “decalin” moiety exhibit diverse biological properties such as anticancer, antimicrobial, neurotrophic, and growth-stimulating activity [23,24,25,26,27].…”

“…Generally, they are cultured in nutrient media in standard laboratory conditions and have the potential to provide structurally diverse natural products for a wide range of applications in drug discovery. For instance, more than 200 natural products containing a “decalin” motif have been isolated from microorganisms, and they have been shown to have diverse and remarkable biological activities, including antifungal, antibacterial, and anticancer properties …”

“…For instance, more than 200 natural products containing a "decalin" motif have been isolated from microorganisms, and they have been shown to have diverse and remarkable biological activities, including antifungal, antibacterial, and anticancer properties. 50 Herein, the endophyte, a seldomly tapped resource for structurally diverse and biologically active compounds, is highlighted. Endophytes are microorganisms that asymptomatically colonize the living tissues of healthy plants for at least a part of their life cycle without causing any visible manifestation of disease.…”
