Natural polymers for vaginal mucoadhesive delivery of vinegar, using design of experiment methods

Abstract: Background/Aim. Vinegars are of the main international traditional nutraceuticals which have been used as vaginal health protectant due to vagina pH balance maintenance and antimicrobial properties. Since the main used form of vinegar was liquid, it was difficult for vaginal application with low residence time; in this study a vaginal mucoadhesive gel of vinegar was designed. Methods. Xanthan gum (XG) and tragacanth (TG) were utilized as natural gel forming polymers. The effects of Xanthan gu… Show more

“…Therefore, mucoadhesion decreased from F 1 to F 6 (77.71-54.49 dynecm -2 ). F 7 and F 8 with highest polymer concentration (5%) showed higher mucoadhesion, noting that TG revealed higher adhesion in comparison with XG in equal polymer concentration as was observed previously in (Parvinroo, Eslami, Ebrahimi-Najafabadi, & Hesari, 2020) (Table 2).…”

“…The mucus layer comprises enzymes, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and salts that not only helps in providing defense against microbial infections but can also facilitate absorption of drug molecules in case they are delivered in adequate mucoadhesive formulations. Here, five formulations of ADP (AC1, AC2, ACX1, ACX2, and ACX3) were developed using different concentrations of the selected polymers, namely, Carbopol 934 and HPMC along with xanthan gum, which have already been reported to have mucoadhesive properties ( Bilensoy et al, 2006 ; Andrade et al, 2014 ; Parvinroo et al, 2022 ). The polymers in the mucoadhesive formulations initially swell and physically connect to the mucin on the tissue followed by the strong chemical interaction of the polymer and the mucus membrane ( Osmałek et al, 2021 ).…”

“…This gel layer was air dried at 25 °C in a desiccator and dried gels were gold sputter coated before FESEM. Samples were observed using an accelerating voltage of 10 kV, a working distance of around 4.4 mm, and magnification between 1 and 50 KX [ 42 ].…”
