Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery

Abstract

Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) is the latest experimental minimally invasive technology being investigated internationally for human use. The technique involves accessing the abdominal and other cavities without actually puncturing the abdominal wall but by using body cavities such as the rectum, vagina, bladder and stomach. The philosophy behind the research is based on improved cosmetic appearance, less pain, reduction in the likelihood of MRSA and the concept that human ingenuity and technological advance can continue to reduce the trauma and discomfort of effective surgery.
