Natural mortality estimation and rational exploitation of purpleback flying squid Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis in the southern South China Sea

Hollow multishelled structures (HoMSs) have gained numerous achievements in broad scientific research fields. In the past decade, the rapid developments of synthetic methods and advanced characterization technologies have enriched HoMS family with abundant chemical compositions and geometric structures. In addition, the control in phase structure and surface structure of HoMSs have also been reported in recent years. With great efforts devoted to controlling the compositional and structural characteristics, such as shell composition, shell number, shell thickness, and intershell space, HoMSs have displayed their intrinsic temporal–spatial nature and proven to be fruitful in optimizing mass transport, storage, and release. This review first summarizes the compositional and structural control of HoMSs in three levels, that is, building subunits, assembled functional shells, and HoMSs. Subsequentially, the essential influence of composition and structure on mass transport, storage, and release is deeply discussed by highlighting the application of HoMSs in energy storage, catalysis, electromagnetic wave absorption, and drug delivery. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in the future development of HoMSs are forecasted.

Stock structure information is an important part of bases for understanding the dynamics of cephalopod populations. Purpleback flying squid Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis is an abundant and highly productive species in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. However, it is characterized by a complex stock structure, and the stock discrimination is an urgent priority to understand basic biology and for stock assessment and management purposes. Here, we used gladius morphology to identify and discriminate the dwarf without a dorsal photophore and middle-sized typical forms of S. oualaniensis in the South China Sea. Results showed that both forms had double axes on the gladius and females consistently had a larger gladius than males. Multivariate analyses using the gladius morphometric characteristics indicated that individuals of dwarf form without a dorsal photophore were distinguished from those of middle-sized typical form, which was evidenced by the obvious groups and significant dissimilarity of gladii of these two forms. The discrimination based on the gladius morphometric characteristics showed a high rate of accuracy, in which a global discrimination accuracy was estimated to be 92.36% for both forms without regarding sexes and 65.82% for the discrimination to form and sex. In combination, these lines of evidence indicated that individuals of dwarf without a dorsal photophore and middle-sized typical forms of S. oualaniensis can be accurately distinguished using the gladius morphometric characteristics, and these results will warrant the application of the gladius to study the stock structure of S. oualaniensis and other squid else.

Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis (SA) is an important squid species in the South China Sea. Based on SA samples collected in 2016, SA was divided into the “dwarf” form (DF) and “medium” form (MF). To understand the changes in gastrointestinal function in SA during sexual maturation, we undertook transcriptomic analyses of the stomach and intestine tissues of the mature and immature DF and MF of SA using the deep-sequencing platform Illumina HiSeq™. We exploited a high-throughput method to delineate differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the DF and MF of SA. A total of 135464 unigenes (68627 unigenes of the DG and 66837 unigenes of the MF) were generated. We identified 7965 and 4051 relative DEGs in the intestine and stomach tissues of the mature DF of SA compared with those of the immature DF of SA; and 22138 and 18460 DEGs in the intestine and stomach of the mature MF of SA compared with those of the immature MF of SA. Gastrointestinal function related to the metabolism of lipids, amino acids, glucose, and energy were changed in SA during sexual maturation. This work is the first to identify a set of genes associated with gastrointestinal function during sexual maturation in SA.
