Natural interspecies transfer of mitochondrial DNA in amphibians.

Abstract: mtDNAs of two Central European water frog species, Rana ridibunda and Rana lessonae, were examined by electrophoresis of restriction enzyme'fragments. Two types of mtDNA occur in R. ridibunda. One shares with mtDNA of R. lessonae 25.8% of 132 fragments generated by 19 enzymes, corresponding to a nucleotide sequence divergence of 8.1%; the other has diverged from R. lessonae mtDNA by only 0.3%. This latter type is a variant R. lessonae mtDNA that has been transferred into R. ridibunda; the introgression may hav… Show more

“…Several studies have provided evidence for interspecific mtDNA transfer in the absence of nuclear gene introgression (Ferris et al, 1983;Powell, 1983;Spolsky and Uzzell, 1984). On the other hand, nuclear and mitochondrial genes were found to change concordantly within hybrid populations or in a transect across hybrid zones (Avise et al, 1984;Szymura et al, 1985;Harrison et al, 1987;Wallis and Arntzen, 1987;Rand and Harrison, 1989;Sumida and Ishihara, 1997).…”

“…This adds to the increasing number of examples of mitochondrial gene exchange betw^een species in other taxa (e.g. mammals [Ferris et al 1983, Carr et al 1986, Tegelstrom 1987, Lehman et al 1991, amphibians [Spolsky andUzzell 1984, Lamb andAvise 1986], and fish [Avise and Saunders 1984]). …”

“…(4) The B donor has not retained its original mitochondria due to introgression of mitochondnial DNA from a different species (e.g., Ferris ci a!., 1983;Powell, 1983;Spolsky and Uzzell, 1984). (5) The present mitochondria of the B donor has lost all similarity to the mitochondria of B in the past through extensive intramitochondrial recombination processes and internal rearrangements (e.g., Falconet et a!., 1984).…”
