Natural frequencies and damping ratios of multi-layered laminated glass beams using a dynamic effective thickness

Abstract: Multi-layered laminated glass panels are those with at least three monolithic glass layers and two viscoelastic interlayers. Multi-layered laminated glass panels are commonly used in floors, roofs and other horizontal glazing accessible to the public where a high level of security is required. Although the glass can be consider a linear-elastic material, the viscoelastic interlayers determine a non-linear behavior of the laminated structure that must be taken into consideration. In this paper, a dynamic effect… Show more

“…The vibration response of glass structures is a relatively recent research topic. Most of the literature studies include experimental, analytical and numerical analyses voted to explore the dynamic behavior of single monolithic or LG members, with limited efforts for the performance assessment of complex assemblies, see for example [25][26][27][28][29][30].…”

“…Sci. 2019, 9, x FOR PEER REVIEW 4 of 26 dynamic behavior of single monolithic or LG members, with limited efforts for the performance assessment of complex assemblies, see for example [25][26][27][28][29][30]. As a general rule, glass slabs should be verified against vibrations under operational conditions in the same way of pedestrian structures composed of other constructional materials.…”

“…Pelayo and Aenlle [26], applying the correspondence principle to the static stiffness obtained from the Galuppi and Royer Carfagni model [1], derived a dynamic effective stiffness which was used to predict the modal parameters of a multilayered glass beam.…”

“…In this paper, the static effective stiffness of a rectangular laminated glass plate with three glass layers and two polymeric interlayers is formulated and validated by a static test with a concentrated load at the mid-point. Then, the static effective stiffness is then extended to the frequency domain using the correspondence principle [20,25,26]. In order to validate the model, the modal parameters of a laminated glass plate consisting of three annealed glass layers and two PVB interlayers, pinned supported at the corners, were estimated by operational modal analysis at 20 ºC.…”

“…However, the generalization of all methods for multi-layered beams can be also found in the literature [9]. In our analysis, we consider a threelayered beam with the same material parameters for both glass layers and with constant properties along the length according to Figure 2.…”
